Johan Svendsen’s (1840–1911) orchestration of Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann’s (1805–1900) Sörgemarsch ved Thorvaldsens Bisættelse i Frue Kirke was published by Wilhelm Hansen in 1895. Hartmann’s original work was composed for the funeral on 30 March 1844 of sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844). It was scored for ‘Cornet in B-flat, Trombone alto e tenore, Trombone basso e Tuba, Organo, Gongon’ and was published in Copenhagen by C.C. Lose & Olsen Forlag in April 1844. For his version of the funeral march, Svendsen chose to use a large symphony orchestra and titled the work Trauermarsch zu Thorwaldsens Besetzung von J.P.E. Hartmann. Für Orchester bearbeitet von Johan S. Svendsen. At Svendsen’s funeral in 1911, his coffin was carried out of Our Lady’s Church in Copenhagen to the strains of Hartmann’s funeral march.
