Fartein Valen

Legende for piano, op. 1

Legend for Piano, Op. 1

FV Op. 1

Legende is Valen's first opus-listed work and his first of nine works for solo piano. Besides each of the Four Piano Pieces,Op. 22, it is the only piano work in Valen's oeuvre with a programmatic title. The first and last part is written in the somewhat unusual time signature of 5/4. According to Arvid Vollsnes, Valen composed the work in 1907-1908, and the composer's personal correspondence confirms that he completed it during the spring of 1908. Legende, Op. 1 is dedicated to Valen's medical doctor Niels Roede.

Composition: Kristiania 1907-1908.
