Svendsen, Johan

Caroline-vals (B-dur)

Caroline Walz (Bb-major)

([da]: Caroline Valz i B.)

JSV 10

Before embarking on his studies in Leipzig in 1862, Johan Svendsen (1840–1911) composed a number of works in the popular genres of his time – nine waltzes, two polkas, two galops, two marches, and a bolero. The nine waltzes are all waltz cycles in Viennese style. They all have an introduction, five numbered waltzes, and a longer, more freely conceived finale with a return to the first part of the first waltz. Caroline Waltz is the most extensive of Svendsen’s nine waltz cycles. The Finale alone originally consisted of nearly 300 bars, but both the score and the parts material include a cut – probably entered by Svendsen himself – that substantially shortens the Finale.

Composition: 28 May 1860.
