Svendsen, Johan

Til Sæters. Vals

To the Mountain Farm. Waltz

([da]: Til Sæters. Vals)

JSV 2

Before embarking on his studies in Leipzig in 1862, Johan Svendsen composed a number of works in the popular genres of his time – nine waltzes, two polkas, two galops, two marches, and a bolero. The nine waltzes are actually waltz cycles in Viennese style. They all have an introduction, five numbered waltzes, and a longer, more freely conceived finale with a return to the first part of the first waltz. To the Mountain Farm is such a broadly conceived waltz cycle with many elements of folk music, such as lure motives and allusions to hardanger fiddle. The work may have been inspired by Claus Pavels Riis’ (1826–1886) eponymous comedy Til Sæters, subtitled ‘a dramatic idyl with songs’. Friedrich August Reissiger (1809–1883) was in charge of the music, primarily arrangements of popular songs and melodies. The comedy was premiered at Christiania Theatre on 20 January 1850 and was an instant success, with over 200 productions on various Norwegian stages and performances in Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Svendsen’s waltz cycle does not survive as a score, but can be reconstructed from two sets of parts: Svendsen’s own set, and a set that was once in the possession of the National Theatre in Oslo, produced by a copyist. Carl Warmuth printed three arrangements of the work in 1883. These arrangements have been believed to be by JS, but the protocols of the publisher Warmuth show that they were arranged by August Horn (1825-1893).

Composition: 1856.

Christiania.
A letter to Carl Warmuth from the 6th of August 1883 shows that the dating is a little uncertain, and that the work probably was composed first for piano, maybe as early as 1856, and then orchestrated later.
