Svendsen wrote ‘Ich steh’ auf des Berges Spitze’ (I stand on the Mountain’s Summit) on 12 February 1863 while staying in Lübeck, Germany. The manuscript reads: ‘(Gedicht von H. Heine) Musik von JSvendsen.’ The date is followed by the number 24 in parentheses. This is an early numbering scheme that is also found in ‘Digt af Molbech’, JSV 25, among others. The text is by Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), first published in Heine’s collection Tragödien, nebst einem lyrischen Intermezzo (1823).
