Menuett av Johannes Steenberg

Menuet by Johannes Steenberg

([de]: Menuet von Stenberg ar von J Svendsen)

Original title: Johannes Steenberg (1776-1801): Menuett

JSV 35

In the summer of 1866, the Norwegian-Swedish Consul in Leipzig, Friedrich Gustav Schultz, invited Svendsen to stay at his summer residence in idyllic Connewitz. Here, Svendsen completed three major orchestrations that are collected in one and the same booklet of altogether 127 pages. The first of these, dated 11 June 1866, is Minuet by Johannes Steenberg (1776–1801). This Menuet was very popular in Norway at the time Svendsen orchestrated it. The title in Svendsen’s manuscript is Menuet von Stenberg ar von JSvendsen, while the concert programme on 12 October 1867 in Christiania listed the minuet as ‘Menuett’, bearbeidelse for orkester av Svendsen, med en tilføyd finale (‘Minuet’, arrangement for orchestra by Svendsen, with an added finale). This finale consists of no less than 48 bars and is Svendsen’s own.

Steenberg’s minuet was first published in March 1862, arranged by Just Riddervold Lindeman (1822–1894): ‘Steenbergs Menuet , udsat for Pianoforto og Violin og for pianoforte alene af J. R. Lindeman’. Trondhjem 1862, Jacob Andersens Enkes Forlag.
