Ungarsk rapsodi nr. 2 av Franz Liszt
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt
([de]: Rapsodie Hongroise von F. Liszt (No2) ar v. Johan S. Svendsen)
Original title: Franz Liszt (1811-1866): Rhapsodie hongroise No. 2 (1847) S. 244/2 (For piano)
JSV 37
Svendsen’s manuscript tells us that the orchestration of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 was completed in Leipzig on 19 October 1866. He had probably begun work on it in mid-July in idyllic Connewitz outside of Leipzig, where the Norwegian-Swedish consul Friedrich Gustav Schultz had offered him to stay at his summer residence.
After graduating from the Leipzig Conservatory, Svendsen made his first public appearance in his native country and city on 12 October 1867. With his debut concert in the large hall of the Old Masonic Lodge, Oslo, Norway he presented himself as a composer, arranger and conductor. The Liszt rhapsody brought this concert to a virtuosic climax.
When Franz Doppler (1821-1883) and Franz Liszt himself orchestrated this Rhapsody some years later than Svendsen it was numbered No. 4 (d-minor). The rhapsodie was originally composed for piano under the title Rhapsodie hongroise. Altogether, Liszt wrote 19 such Hungarian rhapsodies between 1846 and 1885. The second rhapsody, composed in 1847, was dedicated to Count László Teleki and first published in 1851 by Bartholf Senff in Leipzig.
