([de]: Quintett, C dur, für 2 Violinen, 2 Bratschen und Violoncell)

Dedicatee: Dr. Schüssler

String Quintet in C major, Op. 5 was the last of the three opus-numbered chamber works Johan Svendsen (1840–1911) composed while studying at the music conservatory in Leipzig.

It received its premiere at the conservatory’s first graduation concert on 17 May 1867, Norway’s Constitution Day.  The Quintet was well received and was to gain an extensive performance history in Svendsen’s lifetime.

Svendsen, too, must have considered the Quintet a success, since he included it in his important ‘introductory concert’ back home in Norway that autumn, on October 12 in the large hall of Gamle Logen in Christiania.
