Svendsen, Johan
JSV 52
Johan Svendsen’s (1840–1911) Funeral March, Op. 10, is one of the composer’s ‘forgotten’ compositions, mainly because it was never published. It was written in connection with the sudden death of Carl XV (1826–1872), king of Sweden and Norway, on 20 September 1872. The title page in the autograph score reads Sörgemarsch i Anledning af Kong Carl den 15des Död (Funeral March on the Occasion of the Death of King Carl XV). Svendsen employs large symphonic forces, including three flutes, tuba and percussion in addition to the more normal scoring for double woodwinds, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings.
