Svendsen, Johan
JSV 55
The premiere of the Coronation March was performed by four wind bands outdoors along the street Munkegaten in Trondheim, Norway, on the 18th of July 1873, just before the crowning of Oscar II in the Nidarosdomen Cathedral. Svendsen had made quite similar scores for each of the four wind bands involved. He adopted each score to each band according to their size and personell: Jemtlands Fältjägermusikcorps, 5te Artilleribatalions Musikcorps, Marinens Musikcorps and Trondhjemske Brigades Musikcorps. The orchestral version has a slightly different and more complex harmonization in some particular bars. It is probably worked out later than the version for Wind Orchestra. The versions printed by Warmuth for piano two hands and piano four hands might also have been made by Svendsen himself.
