Festival Polonaise, Op. 12

([de]: Fest-Polonaise für Orchester)

Johan Svendsen’s Festival Polonaise, Op. 12, was written for a citizens’ ball at the Old Masonic Lodge in Christiania (Oslo) held 6 August 1873. The coronation of King Oscar II (1829–1907) and Queen Sophie (1836–1913) had been held in Trondheim on 18 July of the same year, and a citizens’ ball was arranged in the capital Christiania (Oslo) in honour of the royal couple. The newly written polonaise opened the ball. In its comprehensive and flowery coverage of the event, the Norwegian daily Aftenposten of 7 August began by describing the décor of the venue in minute detail, followed by a listing of the king’s various dance partners in the polonaise.

Carl Warmuth’s well known printed version from 1886 is based on a copy score made by Johan Hennum (1836-1894). Therefore some important variants in Svendsen’s autograph did not find their way into that edition.
