Romance, Op. 26

([de]: Romanze für Violine mit begleitung des Orchesters (oder auch nur Streichorchester))

JSV 79

Dedicatee: Halvard Emil Heyerdahl

Johan Svendsen’s Romance, Op. 26, is far and away his most frequently played work. Among those who performed the Romance with the composer conducting we find three famous international violin virtuosos whose acquaintance Svendsen had made in London and Paris in the years 1878–1880: Stanisław Barcewicz (1858–1921), Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931) and Pablo de Sarasate (1844–1908). Barcewicz was the soloist at the premiere in Christiania (Oslo) in 1881, accompanied by a string orchestra. The work was supposedly sketched during a couple of hours when a violin student did not show up and then written out as a score the same evening. The Romance is dedicated to Halvard Emil Heyerdahl (1840–1917), a prominent Norwegian engineer who, among other things, founded the Holmenkollen metro line in Oslo. Both Carl Warmuth and Wilhem Hansen had to reprint the Romance many times.

Composition: 1881.
