Johan Svendsen put the finishing touches to the score of his Holberg Cantata, Op. 30, on 24 November 1884. That same day he wrote both to his father and to Carl Warmuth that he felt like a heavy burden was lifted off his shoulders. Svendsen himself conducted the premiere just over a week later, on 3 December, at a gala performance at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Norwegian author and historian Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754). The text of the cantata had been written by Holger Drachmann (1846–1908), a Danish poet, dramatist and painter.
