Svendsen, Johan

Caroline-vals for klaver (G-dur)

(Caroline-Valz)

Caroline Waltz for Piano (G-major)

JSV 9

Dedicatee: Jja

This short piece is not listed separately in the work list of F. Benestad & D. Schjelderup-Ebbe: Johan Svendsen, mennesket og kunstneren, Aschehoug, Oslo, 1990.

The reason is most likely the existence of another ‘Caroline Waltz’, a more extensive waltz cycle for orchestra (Caroline Waltz in B-flat major, JSV 10). The title cum dedication in the manuscript reads To Jja / Caroline Waltz / for / Piano-Forte / by / J. Svendsen 1860. After the last page of the score, the date is given as 1 March 1860. Underneath the score, the name Caroline Julie Knudsen is written in pencil; this may well be the Caroline associated with the title of the work. There was a Caroline Julie Knutsen, born a few days after Svendsen on 11 October 1840 in Christiania, who in 1862 married Oluf Christian Due.

Composition: 1 Mar. 1860.

Christiania

Instrumentation: piano
Metre: 3/4
