In F. Benestad & D. Schjelderup-Ebbe: Johan Svendsen, mennesket og kunstneren, Aschehoug, Oslo, 1990 this is listed as a lost work, VERK 307. It is also mentioned as a lost work in the text pp. 130-131: 'Det første av strykearrangementene, "Den sörjande", er senere forsvunnet". ('The first of the arrangements for strings, 'Den sörjande', has since then disappeared').
Orchestral parts (Autographs) in The Royal Theatre's Music Library in Copenhagen however show that 'Den sörjande' was an early title for the movement from To Svenske Folkemelodier later named 'Du gamla, du friska, du fjellhöga nord'.
This melody is originally a folktune from Västmanland with the text: 'Så rider jag mig öfver tolvmilan skog'. Svendsen probably found the melody in the collection by A. P. Berggreen: 'Svenske folke-sange og melodier', published by C.A. Reitzels Förlag, Copenhagen 1861. In this collection the melody is titled 'Den sörjande', and it is printed with the text 'Så rider jag mig öfver tolfmilan skog'. The text for the Anthem was written by Richard Dybeck in 1844, but the status as National Anthem only came gradually, without any official decision or lawmaking supporting it.
